As a pediatrician with over 7 years of experience treating infants and children, I have seen firsthand the importance of proper hydration and electrolyte balance. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can occur easily in young children due to vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or inadequate fluid intake. Thankfully, oral rehydration solutions can quickly and effectively restore fluid and electrolyte levels.

What Are Electrolytes and Why Are They Important?
Electrolytes are minerals in the body that carry an electric charge, including sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium. They play a vital role in many bodily processes:
- Regulating fluid balance and hydration
- Balancing blood pH levels
- Supporting nerve, brain and muscle function
- Building bone strength
- Assisting in nutrient absorption
When a child loses fluids and electrolytes faster than they can be replaced, an electrolyte imbalance occurs. This can cause serious symptoms like lethargy, confusion, muscle weakness, seizures, coma or even death if left untreated.
As a pediatrician, I have successfully treated hundreds of infants and children for dehydration and electrolyte disturbances by utilizing oral rehydration solutions. These solutions help replenish fluid volume while also replacing essential minerals.
What Are the Common Causes of Dehydration in Children?
There are several reasons a child may become dehydrated, including:
Gastroenteritis (stomach flu): Frequent vomiting and diarrhea leads to excessive fluid loss. This is one of the most common reasons for dehydration in children that I treat.
Fever: Elevated body temperature increases insensible fluid losses as the child perspires more. Fevers often accompany infections that can also cause fluid loss through vomiting and diarrhea.

Reduced Fluid Intake: Infants who are not getting enough breastmilk or formula can become dehydrated. Older kids may also not drink enough, especially if feeling ill.
Hot Weather: Sweating in high temperatures causes the body to lose more water than usual. Children playing vigorously outside in summer heat are prone to dehydration.
As a pediatrician practicing in a tropical climate, I frequently treat kids with heat exhaustion and moderate dehydration during the summer months. Oral rehydration solutions are a simple, effective treatment that rapidly reverses these fluid and electrolyte disturbances.
The Life-Saving Impact of Oral Rehydration Solutions
Oral rehydration solution (ORS) refers to drinks containing glucose and electrolytes in specific ratios that enhance the absorption of water across the intestines. This allows fluid replacement to occur even during active vomiting and diarrhea.

As per medical guidelines, the standard ORS composition is:
- 75 mEq/L of sodium
- 65 mEq/L of chloride
- 20 mEq/L of potassium
- 10g/L of glucose
I have used ORS in hundreds of pediatric cases over my career to safely and effectively rehydrate children with gastroenteritis. Within several hours of starting ORS, most kids perk up as fluid deficits are corrected and electrolytes are replenished.
In fact, ORS has been described by medical experts as one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century. Its discovery has saved at least 50 million lives worldwide over the past few decades.
Prior to the introduction of ORS in the 1970’s, gastroenteritis had a high mortality rate among infants and children. Dehydrated kids were admitted to hospitals for intravenous fluid replacement, but this was not accessible or affordable for many families.
The genius of ORS lies in its simplicity – it is easy to distribute, inexpensive to produce, and can be administered at home without medical supervision in most cases. This has made treatment of dehydration possible even in remote areas without advanced healthcare infrastructure.
As a pediatrician, it is incredibly fulfilling to be able to teach parents how to utilize this life-saving intervention at home. ORS empowers families to prevent and treat dehydration without making an urgent trip to see me!
Tips for Successfully Using ORS at Home
Most cases of mild to moderate dehydration from diarrhea, vomiting or fever can be managed at home with oral rehydration solutions under a pediatrician’s guidance. Here are my top tips for parents:
- Stick to the WHO-approved ORS recipe. Don’t try to make your own concoctions as improper ratios can worsen electrolyte disturbances. Commercially available ORS sachets are very affordable and mix to the perfect concentrations.
- Give small, frequent sips instead of large volumes. This prevents vomiting and allows more time for absorption. Aim for 5-10ml every 1-2 minutes for infants or 15-30ml for older children.
- According to medicalnewstoday, Make it taste better with clear fluids. Once rehydration is underway, mix ORS half and half with water, coconut water or diluted fruit juice to improve palatability. Avoid soda, concentrated juices or dairy products as these can worsen diarrhea.
- Monitor urine output as a metric of success. Expect to see increased wet diapers as hydration improves. Lack of urination after 8 hours likely indicates treatment failure or severe dehydration needing medical attention.
- Follow up rapidly if symptoms persist or worsen. Call your pediatrician if a dehydrated child is not improving within 4-6 hours of starting ORS, or if any danger signs appear like altered mental status, weak pulse, rapid breathing, low blood pressure or inability to drink. Intravenous fluids may be needed.
ORS has transformed pediatric care by giving parents a simple tool to combat dehydration and electrolyte disturbances right at home. As a pediatrician, it is incredibly rewarding to teach families how to utilize this life-saving solution and prevent unnecessary ER visits. With ORS on hand, most kids bounce back quickly without ever needing to step foot in my clinic!
